What is the NDIS and how to apply?

What is the NDIS and how to apply?

What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a funding program sponsored by the Australian Government to support people living with a disability. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), an independent statutory agency, is responsible for implementing the NDIS.

It is estimated that within the next five years, the NDIS will provide more than $22 billion in funding per year that will be accessed by 500,000 Australians who have a permanent and significant disability.

The NDIS helps people with a disability and their families providing supports, aids and equipment from specialised NDIS providers and facilities in the community, according to your NDIS plan.

Am I Eligible For NDIS Funding?

To become a participant of the NDIS scheme – and obtain NDIS support/funding – the applicant must:

  • Be less than 65 years old when you first access the NDIS
  • Be an Australian citizen, hold a permanent visa or a Protected Special Category visa
  • Live in a part of Australia where the NDIS is now available
  • Have a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to take part in everyday activities

The NDIS will also consider whether you usually require assistance from either a family member or a carer or require the use of special equipment to complete day-to-day tasks. It will also be determined whether obtaining support will contribute to building your skills and independence and reduce the need for ongoing support in the future from disability service providers.

How can I get NDIS support?

If you think you may be eligible, you can apply to obtain NDIS support by phone, calling the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) on 1800 800 110 and making a verbal application.

Alternatively, you can download the application form on the NDIS official website and forward it through e-mail or post together with supporting documents and evidence.

What’s next?

Now that you have NDIS, the next step is to look for an NDIS provider to deliver the services you need according to your NDIS plan.

How do I choose an NDIS service provider?

The first step is to consider a provider’s credentials and experience. Look for providers who will match you with the proper support and services you need. It is also essential to ensure that the service provider chosen is registered. To qualify for registration as a provider, there are many requirements, including qualifying under Australian standards to provide support services.

What supports can the NDIS provide?

The NDIS funds a range of supports that can be delivered by NDIS service providers like MKM Disability and Care. These includes:
